FALCON PAWNCH!!!
So this is my Entry for the 2008 "ComicStock" Contest! [link] (submitted ON the deadline, why do i always have to cut it so close?! lol) The concept is to make a drawing based of some winning stock photography pieces. The first prize was a stunning shot of a mid-air upper cut. So i thought, what better epic attack move to illustrate than the single most celebrated punch move in all Nintendo history? the Falcon Punch! so here is a portrait of F-Zero Racer Captain Falcon, destructively and devastatingly demonstrating his trademark move to Samus Aran, the inter-galactic bounty Hunter from the planet Zebes. Epic. as far as the design, for all you fans and detail sticklers, i realize the outfits arent exactly the correct. i like to take a few artistic liberties when drawing fan art. for samus, the suit configuration was a bit different, and i gave her an overall more feminine figure. and falcon, i know he only has one shoulder pad thing, but i just decided to put two. i dont like the single shoulder pad. didnt like it on Cloud, dont like it on Captain Falcon. but they are still pretty much just the same characters. and at least recognizable. *** im very pleased with this piece in general. ive put more effort and work into this piece than any so far. there was quite an extensive process for putting this together. i think i will create a play-by-play showing how i did it sometime in the future. but ill explain it briefly here. Samus, Cpt Falcon, and the background were all drawn separately. they were first sketched lightly in pencil, then inked. the pencil was erased for scanning. The rest is digital. the shading, the coloring, and the effects are all thanks to Photshop CS2. (hallelujah) *** as always, i appreciate constructive critisism, im always trying to improve. *** Special Thanks to the following: The cartoons and comics gallery director, for holding the contest and being so generous with the deadline, and so open for inquiries. For taking the awesome photograph for her helpful digital colouring tutorial. [link] for his digital Lineart tutorial. this really helped me... for his impressive PS colouring and effects tutorial. [link] and for all his crazy-awesome work and of course to all my watchers and friends for your support. (tears...) lol Comments
so you don't submit for quite a while --- I know, who am I to talk --- only to end up submitting a gem like this. definitely worth the long wait.
my first thought while it was loading was "WOW! that's a fiery punch!" beautiful. great background --- not too blurry yet not too distracting amidst all the action --- and great equipment on those characters. you got the detail down pat. -- My brain occasionally curls up and wills itself back to kindergarten. thanks. the star field in the background was the easiest part to draw!
i originally wanted to add highlights layers to the characters, especially samus, since her suit is metal, but the deadline snuck up on me, so i didnt have time to finish it. thanks for the observation. but thanks again. im glad you like it! -- Dont just think out of the box, climb out of the box and burn the box!!! oooh... gem...
i just havent been coming up with too much over the summer. and the stuff i do have, i guess ive just been too lazy to post! im glad you like it. you always notice the little details i put in things. -- Dont just think out of the box, climb out of the box and burn the box!!! thank you. Photoshop has been a journey of discovery for me.
and yeah, im a cartoonist mostly, so lines are my friend. i wish i could master shading like you though. -- Dont just think out of the box, climb out of the box and burn the box!!! |
